Read about Christopher Gregorio and how he's a rotten tit!So, basically, this guy is a flash developer. I may even have played a couple of his games, and I now feel dirty about it. Stinking cabbage-face. Wormridden mule.
And even though that is how the free market works - You don't have to take it or leave it.
That's just defeatist and plain stupid.
If you agree to be paid less than what your work is worth, the next time you'll be asked to be paid as little or less than last time. Sure, you might gain exposure, but in the end, money is always better than exposure. Because money can get you, well, a life.
Fuck the free market. It doesn't control anyone. You've got the power to say no to crap jobs and to demand being paid what your time's worth.
Jay Naylors interpretation of the article is slightly less destructive than what many artists seem to read from Christopher Gregorios article. He is also condescending.
He says:
"No artist is forced to say yes to a contract. No artist should be upset that another
artist may be willing to say yes."
I agree to the first sentence, but the second doesn't seem to be thought through. If another artist is willing to be paid much less than I, the overall worth of art goes down. How hard is that to understand, if you understand the free market?
I am outraged because this guy thinks it is okay to exploit people. He even knows that he's paid much less for his art resources than what it's worth.
Whether you're paid in percentages, per piece or per hour is irrelevant here. If you're offered a percentage it would be necessary to know at least what your client is expecting to earn in total. What the budget is isn't at all relevant until you're asked if you can do it cheaper "Because we're douchebags." or "We don't have a budget." -Which isn't always communicated as clearly as that, so it can be hard to deduce for a newbie.
I don't see why artists ought to be all right with doing work for free. Would you think a carpenter would like to build you a house for free? Or be treated along the guidelines of Christopher Gregorio, master douchebag?
Anyways. I've finished my application for a job at LEGO, Billund. Again. I seem to be doing this every other year. I should do this every year. Spamming them each month might be too much.
